They believed that this was a great deal, but someone in County Appraisal made a goof. Apparently they had not appraised the house in over 12 years, so now the new home owners are being held reliable for the sum of $10,000 in addition to what they are already payed for the house. The previous owner is not having to pay 1 penny for what happened and as of right now neither does the County; most likely the previous home owner was unaware of the error but he may have been fully aware: the only way these backtaxes can pile up is if the home owner makes improvements to the home without reporting them. The county, while it is admitting that they made the mistake, is still saying that the new home owners must pay the bill. So, who should pay: New owners (they were scammed), the County (they goofed but want to make a profit out of their idiocy), or the Old Owners (they illegally added on to a house and shirked the bill)?

This isn't an example of a scam, this is an example of a mistake. As to what would happen in real life, the current owner of the property would be responsible for the taxes due. I am basing this off the fact that I work with tax accesors in multiple municipalities in my RL job.
Now admittedly the property owner would have options to file suit against the previous owner, or the title agency, or even the municipality itself. But regardless of who ultimately pays for the "goof" it is still the property owners responsibility.

This isnt so much of a scam, more like a down right nasty deed...
When doing the very first mission i was nearing the end, just where the last piece of Kilns armour is, and just as i went to pick it up my team mate with the other pieces of armour left the game, at first i thought they had simple been the victim of an err=7, but when i mesaged him, i got a reply that sounded a little like this, "Haha, got you you ******g noob, lmfao." Of course it wasnt to big a lose as i simple sprinted the mission after i had completed it and just grabed all the armour, but even still, its something to watch out for.

Hmmm.. I don't know where I stand on this.
Whereas I would never scam someone and would hate to be scammed myself, I think there will always be people who play the market like this. It's a sort of learn by your mistakes thing.
If people have tried to sell me something I know is worth more than what they're asking, I let them know. I try to help people avoid being scammed. But at the end of the day, people will be sneaky like that and although we shouldn't applaud them (cos for some reason they think it's clever), I don't think we'll ever be able to stop them.
Lying is something completely different. If someone sells a weapon to you and asks for 400 more than it's worth cos they know they can get it out of you.. then that's just learning about the game. If someone sells you something they say is one thing but it's another, these people should have their accounts CLOSED.
They don't deserve the right to play with people who have morals.

There are certain elite or collecters items that are very pricey and not very economical to the mid-class character. Superior vigor, sigils, gold items, and black dye are the most common over-priced "hey I'm a rich lvl 20 now so who cares" items. Most scamms happen because of consumers being unaware and rushing into a purchase. But paying too much for something is not a scamm, its a merchant getting over on a unaware buyer. As in rl, you have to research before you buy that dream car or in our case, that dreamy perfect gold weapon.

It call comes down to read before you click. Caveat Emptor has value in this regard.
If you are mad that someone sold you a bad item, then you have to ask yourself how they got that far with the trade: YOU.
I love how people "don't wanna hear it's my own fault" when that is literally what it is. If you were duped, you should have read the item text before getting mousehappy. Sorry, the truth is more annoying that a lie.

I don't think we're really speaking about a "blame game" here, it doesn't matter who is at fault for a specific scenario. The simple fact that people will try to sell you dye remover instead of dye is just wrong, and if you want to blame anyone you can attempt to blame GW (because the iconic representations at one time were very similar). They fixed that, so its shows that they feel it was an area of improvement on the game. The thread denotes that there are ways to scam and warnings/ways to watch out for it. Its wrong, and it shouldn't be excepted in a video game where you are attempting to promote _team_ play, _team_ fun, and good o'l PVP. There really isn't a good reason to go scamming people besides the person being a <fillin explitive here> type of person.
Having someone pay too much for an item isn't scamming, its gouging And that is really up to the opinion of the person buying... if I sell a steel ingot for 250gp and another guy sells it for 200gp am I scamming the buyer for making them pay 50gp more then my competitors? No, not really. If they want to shop around then they can. They're paying an extra 50gp for instant access to the steel w/o looking any further. Just as I may pay extra for a DVD if I buy it at a Super Stop and Shop grocery store instead of BlockBuster video or a video-centric store.
If you sell someone a steel ingot for 900gp and don't tell them they can get it cheaper then that is what is called "being a merchant." Who is going to try to sell you something and then say "oh, actually my competitor has it for waay cheaper, go buy from them." -- not a great way to make money or a sale is it? And if they pay the 900gp then it was worth 900gp TO THEM or else they would have told ya "no thanks."

I have had troubles a few times with trades not recognizing accept. Hitting Cancel and starting again always fixed it.

I've usually found that this is due to you walking a slight distance away from the user and the trade cannot be completed (but the interface does not tell you). I've had this occur with NPC traders as well.
Other thing that's kinda nagging: when you have too much stuff in your inventory an hit "accept" it will say "user cancelled trade" -- when they didn't...the user just didn't have room. It should state that.

Family Sigil scam, got me
I was tricked into buying a Family Sigil from Lord Molvania, he claim it is what the Celestial Sigils become after you cancel your hall. And you can use it the same way as a Celestial Sigil. I lost 40K (a resonable price for a Celestial Sigil) so that alarm didn't go off. And he even explained how to got that way. So as a warning to everyone else. Be wary of this scam/scammer.

Drop Trade Hack/Scam:
Player A has VERY valuable item to sell, and has not played game for more than a couple of weeks. Player B claims he wants to buy, but can't get trade screen to engage in town (multiple trade/cancles). Asks player A to team up and go out of town. Out of town, every time player A puts item in trade window, player B keeps canceling claiming he has connection problem. Finnally doing it enough times, player A drops item while placing in trade window, player B picks up and maps out.
Spoke to player A about it today (while he was asking how to get someone to report incident to) and player B through whisper answered with affirmation that he could care less about gullible _______s and deserved to be scammed. Reported to Arena Net, bug must be fixed or only allow two cancels and time out period.

Wow, you really have to be a jack-ass to pull that one off. Not to mention the effort to make it occur seems not worth the time. Personally I'd tell him "too bad" after the third cancel and sell to someone without such "issues"
Its amazing what people will do to screw you over.

We're dealing with mostly pre-pubscent teenagers here, many who ARE gullible after thinking this game is scam proof compared to others on the net. Don't just blame the "jack ass" for the scam, blame the scammer instead.

The first step of realizing any scam is when someone says that they can't do something in town or they are having connection issues. That should set off alarms. "Doing it enough times"? How many is enough times? I mean if it took 2 or 3 (although as soon as the person said they couldn't do it in town should have told them to go elsewhere), I can see an issue but if the cancel crap had to be done like 15 or 30 times well, caveat emptor.
It sounds like it was a timing issue. The scammer was attemtping to time closing the trade window so that seller miss placing his item on the screen and thusly drop the item and if this is case, its not a bug and no real way to fix it. Many times folks will put items up times for the deal so this wouldn't be fair to those doing things honestly as they work out the trade. The seller may have been too quick to place the item on the trade screen.
Now if was a case of the number of cancellations caused the item to automatically drop to the ground on its own than by all means this most definately is bug.

No, I blame the "jack ass" for the scam. I don't care how young or gullible you are, we are all here to play a game and have fun. Jack asses aren't tolerated in real life real well, and should be less tolerated when your trying to have fun playing a game.
If you choose to live your life scamming folks out of there stuff then I hope there is a special place for you in limbo when one of them finally off's ya.

Again, these are excited pre-teens here we're talking about. How may people got scammed the same way in D2 (come over here and drop it behind the wall-remember that one). When a kid is trying to sell something very valuable, the excitement overwhelms logic. It happens to adults everyday sending money for trunks of gold to Nigeria.

Something werid is going on right now.
Raw material prices are rising.
Especially for frosted grifon wings, wich is werid because they are easy to farm.
One frosted grifon wing should not be sold below 200-300g each, i dont know why but it seems that 250 wings are worth >40k gold.
this goes into the scam thread because ppl get scammed for their grifon wings selling them for 40gold each.

Just a quick question here... It has been said many times that buying quest items from someone else is useless because you still have to do the quest to get the xp. This is mostly said about the Ashes but is it true for every quest item? I personally gave away and egg (can't remeber the name of it) and a bear skin in pre-searing (at no cost to the other person) just because it was taking up room in my inventory and I had already completed the quests. The other person did indeed get the xp for the quests. (Note: The egg was just to summon the queen worm and the other person did still have to kill it...so I can see that one working out... but what about the bear skin? They did not have to kill a bear, they just took my extra skin and completed the quest)

You can give away quest items, I think it may only be when the item has been used in a quest and NOT removed from your inventory. I gave my wife the bear pelt from pre-searing for the dude in the village and he excepted it just fine. I'm not sure 100% of the quest items are this way, but that case it worked fine.
-Or- it could be that the ashes is a special quest (you need both steps of the quest for experience...finding the ghost, and getting the ashes).
